Description
The Jaguar E-Pace is the smaller of two Jaguar crossovers, more tidy than the F-Pace. It offers a sexy shape, fabulous front seats in a modern interior with a huge touchscreen, sublime all-wheel-drive handling, and a vocal 2.0-liter turbo-4. Because it got a thorough update last year, for 2022 there are few changes.
The turbo-4 engine makes 246 hp, with a 296-hp version that can do 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Its slick 9-speed automatic transmission works great under full throttle, but it?s less decisive at low speeds. There?s a torque-vectoring rear end that adds grip and precision during cornering.
The E-Pace seats four adults comfortably with 22.4 cubic feet for their cargo. It?s 173 inches long with a 105.6-inch wheelbase.
It?s EPA-rated at 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined, on premium gas. It hasn?t been crash-tested yet, but standard safety equipment in the base model includes automatic emergency braking and active lane control. Available on upper models are a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitors. Adaptive cruise control is optional.
Model Lineup
Made in Austria, the base E-Pace costs $42,850, and includes leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights,12-way power front seats, wireless smartphone charging, and an 11.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
At $47,950 for the E-Pace SE, you get a power tailgate, 19-inch wheels, keyless start, blind-spot monitors, and parking sensors.
The 300 Sport for $52,050 adds 20-inch wheels, torque-vectoring for the all-wheel drive, a head-up display, and a 12-speaker Meridian sound system.
The excellent 5-year/60,000-mile warranty includes free scheduled maintenance.
Exterior
The attractive E-Pace is distinctive for an SUV. It has a taller profile but a roofline that dips at the rear. It rides on a stance that is squat on wide haunches, but the body isn?t stubby. The front end is clean and appealing, with a trim mesh grille between angled LED headlamps over bigger air intakes.
It looks markedly crisp with the 300 Sport?s 20-inch wheels and a black exterior trim package.
Interior
The cabin makes excellent use of the space that?s available. A wall divides the driver from the passenger, who has good head and knee room. The power seats have terrific bolsters and 12 ways of adjustment, with heating and cooling on the top models. The infotainment is displayed on an 11.4-inch touchscreen.
The trim is rich, and upper models have more leather, more stitching, and more inches of digital displays.
The rear seats have good bolsters and firm padding. There?s 34.3 inches of leg room, which feels better than the numbers say. There?s not so much head room because of the roofline, however. There are three seatbelts, but only two can fit comfortably.
Behind the rear seat there?s 22.4 cubic feet for cargo, and 49.5 cubic feet with the seat folded.
Driving Impressions
The 2.0-liter turbo-4 makes 246 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, and is able to run from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds. There?s some turbo lag to the vocal engine, and the 9-speed transmission gets confused at part-throttle at city speeds.
The same engine twists out 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in the 300 Sport, using more turbo boost. It accelerates to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, and you can feel the four-tenths difference to 60 mph, but better than that is the 300 Sport?s torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, which moves the power between the rear wheels for better grip. It doesn?t just add traction for slippery conditions, but aids cornering in the dry.
The handling is superior, especially for a crossover that weighs 3,925 lb. The E-Pace responds sharply and corners flat, with the adaptive damping and selectable drive modes found in the SE and 300 Sport. It?s composed even when it?s being pushed, and fluent at high speeds.
Final Word
The 2022 Jaguar E-Pace has appeal both for driving enthusiasts and urban commuters. It?s fun to drive, stylish, and on point with the latest infotainment features. The 300 Sport has all the verve you?d expect for its price and power points.
